Cell Ornaments

We recreated plant and animal cells using plastic, clear ornaments.
The Cytoplasm is represented by the plastic wrap,
Nucleus is a large puff ball,
Mytochondria are pipe cleaners bent into "m's",
the Vacuole are puff balls (or one large puff ball)
and if it is a plant cell it is wrapped with pipe cleaners for the cell wall.
These were lots of fun!

Baggie Chemistry

We loved making predictions and determining what our mixtures would produce. This hands on activity really helped us to remember that there are 4 evidences to a chemical change: Gas produced (bubbles are formed -- this is our favorite!), Solid produced, Color changes, and Temperature changes.

Observations with 5 senses

Using a Tootsie Roll & their 5 senses, the 4th and 5th science classes made observations during their candy lab. The students used figurative language to describe their candy, such as: "It feels smooth like a piece of paper" and "It smells as sweet as sugar." Of course their favorite sense was the sense of TASTE!

WELCOME BACK

Whew! What an exciting start to the new year! 4th & 5th look different with the arrangement of our 4 block program but we are making some awesome progress. Since Wednesdays are enrichment and assessment days my homeroom practiced the Scientific Method today.

"What's the Chance?" - a probability game you can play at home! Don't forget to state a Hypothesis, collect data, and draw a conclusion....

5th grade Hallway

Our hallway is looking awesome right now! If you've not been to the school (parents), we hope you walk down one morning or be sure and come see our work at the Black History Night open house  on 2/27/14.

Our "Decimal Olympics" competition in progress... We have to compare & order the winners from each home room and finish our word problem competition.

Human Body System Blvd. -- research towers. The students created poems, fun facts, and drawings about each system then added their data to the towers. Looking great 5th grade!!

"We are all the same on the inside!"  Our human body models not only teach us about the workings of each system but remind us of our sameness at the same time!

Model Lungs (using QR codes)

Today the students used their iPads to scan a QR code for instructions on building a model lung using an empty water bottle, balloon, plastic sack, and rubber band. What an awesome learning opportunity!
